What to Do If Your Car Key Fob Isn’t Working in Kissimmee, FL

  June 10, 2025

Your car key fob is supposed to make life easier—until it stops working. Whether you can’t unlock your doors, start your engine remotely, or get the panic button to work, it can be frustrating and confusing.

At All Car Shop, we often help drivers figure out whether they need a simple battery replacement or a full fob reprogramming. Here's what to do if your car key fob suddenly stops working—or only works some of the time.

Common Reasons Your Key Fob Isn’t Working

1. Dead or Weak Battery

The most common issue. Most key fobs use a small coin cell battery that lasts 2–3 years. Signs of a low battery include:

  • Reduced range
  • Inconsistent performance
  • No response at all
Fix: Replace the battery (usually CR2032 or similar) at home or stop by All Car Shop—we’ll test and replace it for you.

2. Signal Interference

Nearby radio towers, cell phone signals, or even Wi-Fi networks can sometimes block or interfere with your fob's signal.

Fix: Try stepping away from large metal structures or crowded areas and use the fob again. If it works away from your home or workplace, interference might be the cause.

3. Damaged Fob or Internal Contacts

Dropped your fob in water? Stepped on it? Internal circuit boards can fail or become disconnected.

Fix: Some damage can be repaired. If not, we can help you order a new fob and handle the programming.

4. Deprogrammed or Lost Connection

Occasionally, a key fob can lose synchronization with your vehicle due to a battery disconnect or glitch in your vehicle’s control system.

Fix: Reprogramming may be required—either at the dealership or with our OBD-equipped technicians.

5. Ignition or Start Button Problems

If your fob works to unlock the car but won’t start it, the problem could lie in the start button, brake switch, or transponder reader, not the fob itself.

Fix: We can inspect the start system and determine if it's the fob or another electrical fault.

Can You Still Start the Car Without a Working Fob?

Yes—most vehicles have a hidden backup option. You can usually:

  • Hold the fob near the start button (many vehicles have an RFID reader there)
  • Use the physical key hidden inside the fob to unlock the door and access the ignition slot in push-start vehicles
Check your owner’s manual for the specific emergency method your vehicle uses.

How All Car Shop Can Help

If your key fob isn’t working, don’t rush to the dealership. We can:

  • Replace the battery on the spot
  • Test your fob for signal output
  • Help you order a replacement fob
  • Assist with reprogramming or syncing your fob to your vehicle
